Every day, thousands of professional drivers navigate New Zealand’s roads - delivering goods, connecting communities, and driving the nation’s economy forward. But behind the wheel, driver fatigue and distraction remain silent risks with potentially devastating consequences.
Understanding real-world driver behaviour
AutoSense is proud to be New Zealand’s exclusive distributor of Guardian by Seeing Machines — world-leading driver monitoring technology that helps identify and reduce fatigue- and distraction-related incidents.

These New Zealand Guardian Insights Reports draw on human-verified data from vehicles equipped with Guardian technology operating exclusively within New Zealand, offering an unprecedented view of real-world driver behaviour across the country.

All fatigue and distraction events (including mobile phone use) are verified by trained analysts in the 24/7 Guardian Contact Centre. This ensures every data point reflects a genuine, real-world event — providing a uniquely accurate picture of road safety performance on New Zealand’s roads.

For the year to 30 June 2025, Guardian technology captured 983,750 risky driving events across New Zealand, from 5,945 equipped vehicles operating across 864 fleets and travelling 442,614,614 kilometres.

Why it matters
These reports highlight not just the scale of driver fatigue and distraction, but also the opportunities to build safer habits, smarter systems, and a stronger safety culture - one journey at a time.
