Guardian insights real-world data on NZ driver behaviour

Every day, thousands of New Zealanders get behind the wheel for work - keeping businesses moving, connecting communities, and supporting the nation's economy. But behind every journey, fatigue and distraction remain hidden risks with potentially serious consequences.

Understanding real-world driver behaviour

AutoSense is proud to be New Zealand's exclusive distributor of Guardian by Seeing Machines — world-leading driver monitoring technology that helps identify and reduce fatigue- and distraction-related incidents.

These New Zealand Guardian Insights Reports draw on human-verified data from vehicles equipped with Guardian technology operating across New Zealand, providing an unprecedented view of real-world driver behaviour and emerging safety trends.

Every fatigue and distraction event, (including mobile phone use), is verified by trained analysts in the 24/7 Guardian Contact Centre. This ensures every data point represents a genuine, real-world event, delivering a uniquely accurate picture of road safety performance on New Zealand roads.

For the year ended 31 March 2026, Guardian technology captured 1,017,726 risky driving events across New Zealand, from 6,098 equipped vehicles operating across 842 fleets and travelling 485,786,013 kilometres. The report also compares data with the previous 12 months, providing valuable insight into changing driver behaviours and emerging risk patterns.

Why it matters

These reports highlight not only the scale of fatigue and distraction across New Zealand's commercial fleet sector, but also the opportunity to improve safety through technology, leadership, education, and stronger driver engagement - helping create safer journeys for everyone.
